Kiev, the city of the golden domes

Kiev is a city that opened to tourism after the end of communism. A thousand year old capital, with museums and Orthodox churches topped with golden onion-shaped domes. Kiev is a beautiful city with many sites to visit, in particular religious buildings.

To begin with, Saint Sophia Cathedral, one of the city's oldest buildings that was built during the 11th century. It has rich mosaics and frescoes and symbolized by the image of a 6-meter high Virgin. The Saint Michael's Golden Domed Cathedral, located across from Saint Sophia, was destroyed by the Soviets and completely rebuilt in the 90s. The Saint Vladimir Orthodox Cathedral is also worth a visit, as is Saint Andrew's Church, a remarkable baroque monument with a banister terrace that offers a superb view of Podl (the lower city) and the Dniepr River.

You will also enjoy the Lavra Caves National Reserve of Kiev, which is composed of 144 buildings, in particular a monastery founded in 1051, as well as several museums. The Lavra Caves of Kiev is on the UNESCO World Heritage list.

However, the building that symbolizes Kiev is still the majestic Mariinsky Palace, dating back to the 1750s, and today the home of Ukraine's president. Not far from there is the Rada Supreme building (Parliament), topped with a glass cupola.

Kiev also has many museums: the Museum of the Great Patriotic War, the National Museum of Ukrainian History, the Chernobyl National Museum etc.
