Before your journey to Santiago, make sure you are familiar with the country's entry requirements:

• A passport that's valid upon your intended date of departure is all that's needed: Irish citizens staying for a duration of under 90 days do not require a visa.
• You do not need a vaccination certificate to gain entry to Chile.
• The official language of Chile is Spanish.
• The currency is the Chilean Peso: remember to check what the rate of exchange is with the Euro before you go to ensure you take adequate funds with you.
• The best times of the year to go to the central Andean region and Patagonia are spring and autumn. Any time of the year is good for a visit to northern Chile, although if you go between April and November you will avoid the heat and the rain of the summer period.
• Chile is 5 hours behind Ireland in the summer and 3 hours behind in the winter.
• The climate is temperate in the central region and Mediterranean on the Pacific coast. At higher altitudes, in the Atacama desert and on the Altiplano, the temperature variation between day and night is very marked: you are therefore advised to bring summer and winter clothing with you if you intend to travel through these regions.

The huge expanse of the city of Santiago, which has around 6 million inhabitants, is an impressive sight. This laid-back Latin American capital city around a hundred kilometres from the sea contains countless skyscrapers, long avenues, winding streets, squares and churches, as well as buildings dating from the Spanish colonial period. Founded in 1541 by the conquistador Pedro de Valdivia, Santiago is located at the foot of the snow-capped Andes.

As you stroll through the town, you'll see the Plaza de Armas in the historical centre of Santiago, the fish and fruit markets in the northern districts and poet Pablo Neruda's house, 'La Chascona', in Bellavista. Architectural delights range from the 16th century church of San Francisco to the modern glass towers of the business district. If you climb the Cerro San Cristobal, a hill in the middle of the city, you'll enjoy stunning panoramic views!

The city of Santiago has some wonderful museums containing everything from Pre-colombian to contemporary works of art. As for Chilean cuisine, it has a well-deserved reputation for top-quality, fresh produce. Due to the country's past, it blends Amerindian and Spanish influences, as well as British and German touches! If you like to party, then head for the cafés and night clubs of the lively district of Bellavista. For some rest and relaxation, you could take a stroll in the Forestal Park beside the Mapocho River.
