Lima, the historical capital of Peru, is located on the Pacific Ocean and surrounded by the Andes mountains. It is also one of South America's largest cities. Nearly 10 million people live in the city and its greater area. Founded in 1535 by Francisco Pizarro, a Spanish conquistador, Lima has since retained its function as capital after the country's independence (1822).
In addition to the fact that it is the political capital, Lima is an extremely dynamic city in different sectors: industry, trade, culture, finances, etc.
Thanks to its rich architectural heritage that tells the history of Peru, from the colonial period to the 20th century, Lima has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1991. Most of the remarkable monuments are located in Lima's historical centre, such as the National University of San Marcos (the oldest on the continent) the Torre-Tagle Palace, the Riva-Agüero house, the Prado house as well as the Negreiros house. Many Inca and native sanctuaries were unfortunately torn down during Spanish colonization and other buildings were also destroyed during a violent earthquake in 1746.
Contrary to what you may think, Lima's geographic location produces mild temperatures (between 19°C and 26°C in summer and between 12°C and 19°C in winter). Note that although the city has low precipitation levels, humidity is high between the months of June and December.
