Visit Guangzhou, the capital of Chinese cuisine

With some 13 million inhabitants, Canton, also known as Guangzhou, is the third largest city in China after Beijing and Shanghai. It forms part of the Pearl River Delta Mega City area, with a population of around 40 million. The city hosted some events of the 2010 Summer Olympics. During your stay here you may well be surprised at the sheer extent of this city. The international airport (Guangzhou Baiyun) is one of the largest in all China. Guangzhou is very well-geared to tourism, boasting numerous hotels.

The city of Guangzhou offers plenty to see and do. There are some absolute musts, however, including the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall, which is over a hundred years old. Its construction was funded by members of this family drawn from 72 counties in Guangdong Province.

You may also have the opportunity to visit the memorial to Sun Yat-Sen. This politician, revolutionary and former President of the Republic of China hailed from the Province of Guangdong. He was one of the founders of the Republic and this large memorial hall was designed as a tribute to him.

Meanwhile, locals and tourists alike can enjoy all the fun of the fair at Dongfang Amusement Park, located at the foot of Mount Baiyun,

Yuexiu Park, Guangzhou's largest, is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of the city and take a time-out from your tourist itinerary.

Canton also occupies a very special place in the annals of Chinese gastronomy.

You'll be able to savour a raft of traditional Chinese dishes in the city's many restaurants, including dim sum which are steamed meat and prawn dumplings that may be enjoyed at any time of the day.

Beyond Guangzhou

From Guangzhou, you can travel to Beijing by train without having to make any changes. However, this will take around twenty hours. By plane, it's a mere three hour direct flight to the Chinese capital. But before you head off into the wide open spaces of China, why not see more of the huge Province of Guangdong, one of the wealthiest and most economically dynamic regions of China? Its capital, Shenzhen, is located on the south coast of the country, just opposite Hong Kong. Shenzhen plays a particularly key role in the Chinese economy and has recently become something of a tourist hotspot. The city's attractions include:

  • Shenzhen Window of the World, a park featuring replicas of famous places and historical buildings
  • Shenzhen Safari Park
  • Splendid China Folk Village, a theme park with miniaturized reproductions of Chinese tourist attractions enabling you to see the whole of China in a day
  • Numerous holiday resorts offering a wide range of leisure activities
