Cairo, Egypt's capital and Africa's largest city

In Cairo, you will land at Cairo international airport located 24 km to the north of the city centre, which you can reach by bus (a bus every 30 minutes) or by taxi. In fact, taxi is the best way to get around in the city because it is not very expensive. Look for official taxis, you can recognize them by the colours black and white. Cairo also has two subway lines.

With 16 million inhabitants, Cairo is the largest city in Africa and in the Middle East. The city is located on the banks of the Nile River and on several adjacent islands to the north of the country. It never stops growing.

The Arab name for Cairo is Al-Qāhira which means, "The Victorious". Cairo's history, and especially the region, goes back to antiquity. Islamic Cairo was founded in the 10th century and became the new centre for Islam. It reached its golden age in the 14th century.

Cairo, a dynamic and complex city

Cairo is a dynamic city that has no less than 150 multi-faceted neighbourhoods. They are full of sites to discover. It is impossible to make a complete list, but here are some of the main points of interest. To the east of the Nile, you can begin with Old Cairo, which shelters one of the largest and oldest souks in the world, in the Khan-Khalil neighbourhood. It is a neighbourhood that has beautiful mosques and churches. Islamic Cairo obviously has many mosques, such as the important Al-Azhar mosque. Near there, you can head to Bab al-Nasr, the "Gate of Victory" and Bab al-Futuh, the "Gate of Conquests", built in 1087.

Coptic Cairo includes the ancient city of Babylon, a high place of Christianity. You can admire the two towers at the entrance to the city that date back to 98 A.D. as well as the hanging church, dedicated to the Virgin.

The centre of Cairo shelters the majestic Abdine Palace, built at the end of the 19th century that served in particular as a royal residence before the abolition of the monarchy in 1952.

The city is not lacking in museums either: the Egyptian Museum, the Museum of Islamic Art, the Museum Gayer-Anderson, dedicated to oriental art, or the Coptic Museum, proof of the importance of Christianity in Egypt.

Of course, you can't miss a visit to one of the world's seven wonders: the extremely famous Giza pyramids, very close to Cairo: Cheops, Khafre and Menkaure, erected by the Egyptians to serve as tombs for their kings 3,000 years ago. You can also discover the famous Sphinx as well as many temples and other smaller pyramids on the same plateau.

Travelling to Cairo: useful tips

If you take a trip to Cairo, Irish citizens require a passport that is valid for six months after your planned departure from the country, as well as a visa.

The best period to fly to Cairo, is during the months of March to May and September to November because temperatures can reach 40°C in the summer.

Currency in Egypt is the Egyptian pound. It is easy to exchange foreign currency, however, it is preferable to have US dollars. Major credit cards are accepted in department stores for large purchases.
