Buenos Aires, Argentina's capital, is also the 2nd most populated city in South America after São Paulo, with more than 3 million inhabitants. Located on the Atlantic Ocean and on the west bank of the Rio de la Plata River, Buenos Aires is Argentina's largest port.

It was first founded in the 16th century by Pedro de Mendoza, a Spanish conquistador who was searching for gold, and Buenos Aires was first called " Nuestra Señora Santa Maria del Buen Ayre " which means "Our Lady Saint Mary of the Good Wind". After the Indians destroyed the colony, it was rebuilt by another Spaniard, Juan de Garay, and then called "Santísima Trinidad y Puerto de Santa María del Buen Ayre" which means "The Very Holy Trinity and Port of Saint Mary of the Good Wind". Spain abandoned the port, preferring those on the Pacific coast, and the colony gradually turned to contraband activities for leather.

In 1816, Argentina officially gained its independence and the city of Buenos Aires became the capital. Argentina maintained the typical architecture from the colonial period as well as a religion, among other things. The country still has a majority of Catholics.
