The Casbah in Algiers, the old section of "Algiers the White".
The Casbah in Algiers is on the UNESCO World Heritage list and is a must-see for anyone who travels to Algiers. The Casbah or al Qasbah actually designates "the citadel" which overlooks the city. Today the term has a broader meaning and designates the entire historical neighbourhood that surrounds the citadel. Many of the original buildings have disappeared.
However, the Casbah in Algiers still maintains the typical charm of a medina in Maghreb with its maze of small narrow streets, old mosques like Jamaa El Kebir and its palaces that today house museums such as the Bardo. The numerous architectural influences from Africa, the Orient and the Mediterranean add to the buildings' picturesque beauty.
Take a stroll through the winding streets to discover the history and atmosphere of this neighbourhood in Algiers. You will understand how community life is organized in the medina while you enjoy the peaceful, traffic-free streets.
